Chapter one discusses important
steps in how to get started on research papers. It lists talking points on how
to aim at the right audience and how to hone into a particular topic. The Bedford Researcher states that
choosing a genre is a decisive task, because your audience will automatically
gravitate to one they favor and are familiar with. Everybody knows what type of style they enjoy
reading and you should aim your style of writing to that particular
demographic. This will give you cues on
how to organize and style your paper to the right people who you want to write
towards. After you’ve chosen your topic
you should explore different methods on finding the best voice for you paper.
You can gauge this by doing free writing, brainstorming, or researching to see
what goals you want to meet and limits to set for your subject. Creating a research log is a great way to
maintain a schedule and your thoughts about the ongoing research you will be
starting.
This
chapter was a nice introduction and it gave a few pointers on how to start a
research paper in a way for beginners. I thought most of it was already known,
but it does showcase the importance of not being too broad with your topic and
to aim at using a specific style and topic to capture your topic in the best
light. The detailed research log is an idea that seems great if you’re a
well-organized person (or trying to be).
